Who runs this site

Free Protein Calculator is run by one person, not a company or a team. I am not a doctor, dietitian or nutrition scientist. I build websites, and I made this one because I wanted a protein calculator that shows where its numbers come from.

Because I am not a clinician, I do not give advice of my own. The calculator applies ranges published by sports-nutrition bodies, and the articles summarise published studies. Please read the medical disclaimer: this is general guidance, not personal medical advice.

Where the numbers come from

The calculator's ranges are taken from these published sources:

  • International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) — position stand on protein and exercise, Jäger et al. (2017)
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada and ACSM — joint position on nutrition and athletic performance, Thomas et al. (2016)
  • British Journal of Sports Medicine — meta-analysis of protein supplementation and resistance training, Morton et al. (2018)
  • PROT-AGE Study Group — recommendations for older people, Bauer et al. (2013)

The articles cite further studies at the bottom of each page. I check the references against PubMed, and I have found and corrected errors in some of them: here is what I found and how I checked. If you spot a wrong or missing citation, please tell me and I will fix it.

What the calculator does

  • Free — no signup, no premium tier, no ads
  • Runs in your browser — the figures you enter are not sent to a server or stored
  • An estimate — it factors in age, weight, activity, training days and goal, but it cannot know your health history
