How the Cycling Calories Burned Calculator works

Formula: Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.

The selected Adult Compendium MET represents total (gross) activity intensity, so the estimate includes resting energy used during the session. Calories per hour applies the same equation at 60 minutes.

Assumptions and limits: MET values are standardized averages. Grade, terrain, wind, movement efficiency, fitness, and drafting where relevant can materially change actual energy expenditure. Results are estimates for education and planning, not medical advice.

Are the cycling calorie results gross or active calories?

They are gross calories, so resting energy during the ride is included. Active or net calorie estimates subtract the resting energy that would have been used over the same period.

How should I choose a cycling speed band?

Choose the band closest to your typical road speed during the ride. Speed is used as a practical intensity proxy; it is not a direct measure of power or effort.

Does the cycling calculator include hills, wind, or drafting?

No. It does not separately model gradient, headwind, tailwind, road surface, bike type, riding position, or drafting. Any of these can materially change effort at the same speed.

Can I use this calculator for a stationary bike?

The available choices are road-speed bands, so they may not represent a stationary bike well. For indoor cycling, measured power or an intensity specifically matched to the session is more informative than virtual speed.

Why can a power meter or bike computer report different calories?

This calculator uses standardized MET averages. Devices may use measured power, heart rate, proprietary equations, or additional personal data, so results can differ and neither is guaranteed to equal actual energy expenditure.

Can I enter cycling weight in pounds?

Yes. Select imperial units to enter pounds. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms for the equation; calorie, hourly calorie, and MET outputs remain consistent between unit systems.
