How the Walking Calories Burned Calculator works

Formula: Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.

The selected Adult Compendium MET represents total (gross) activity intensity, so the estimate includes resting energy used during the session. Calories per hour applies the same equation at 60 minutes.

Assumptions and limits: MET values are standardized averages. Grade, terrain, wind, movement efficiency, fitness, and drafting where relevant can materially change actual energy expenditure. Results are estimates for education and planning, not medical advice.

They are gross calories, meaning the estimate includes resting energy used during the walk. An active or net calorie estimate would subtract resting energy for the same duration.

How should I choose a walking intensity?

Choose the speed band closest to your typical walking speed for the session. The four options use practical speed ranges tied to standardized Compendium MET values, not a personalized fitness test.

Does the walking calculator include incline or grade?

No. It uses speed-based level-walking MET choices and does not model treadmill incline, hills, or grade. Uphill walking can require materially more energy than the displayed estimate.

Why might my actual walking calories differ?

Terrain, wind, carried load, stride, movement efficiency, fitness, temperature, and measurement error can change energy use. MET values are standardized population averages rather than direct measurements.

Can I enter walking weight in pounds?

Yes. Select imperial units to enter pounds. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms for the MET equation; calorie, hourly calorie, and MET outputs remain the same type of result in either unit system.

Should I add resting calories to this walking estimate?

No. Resting energy is already included because the result uses gross MET values. Adding resting calories again would count that portion twice.
